Sometimes, being a wedding photographer can be bittersweet. It's easy to become friends with your clients when you share in one of the biggest days of their lives.
Months are spent planning and coordinating every little detail, and I personally want my clients to feel confident in having me as their photographer, and have trust in me to deliver images of their wedding day that they will love and cherish.
Those months pass quickly and so does the wedding day.
As a photographer, it's a relief that the physical work day is over, although the digital one has just begun.
But as a person; however, being someone who forms bonds and friendships easily with people, post-wedding depression can be a real thing. For me, anyway.
The reality of a wedding being a once-in-a-lifetime gathering is true, as experience has come to teach me. Time flies. People come and go. Love burns and fades. New souls are born, and others pass on.
Experiences remain. Memories remain. Photographs remain.
Being a wedding photographer can sometimes be bittersweet because we don't often get repeat clients, as life has many directions.
But sometimes, if we let it, life will surround us with the people who truly love and support what we do, and value not only our work, but our worth. This is what I've really been practicing attracting into my life, and let me tell you, it's worth it.
Thank you to Sophia + Ryan for trusting me to capture their wedding day in Galena, Illinois.
Here is their wedding day story:
Sophie + Ryan decided they wanted to escape the city of Chicago for their wedding and ditch the traffic hassles, parking stresses, and concrete scenery and opt for a beautiful wedding weekend getaway in Galena, IL, three and a half hours west on I-80 from Chicago.
With its rolling green hills, scenic overlooks of the Mississippi River, and vast greenery, Irish settlers from Chicago brought their families to settle Galena as stories say it reminded them of the famed green of the Irish countrysides, and it's very easy to see why as the scenery comes into view.
I also LOVE that they planned an entire wedding WEEKEND for their friends and families to spend time together, instead of a traditional wedding day.
I believe traditions are changing, and I definitely hope more brides and grooms planning their weddings choose to plan a weekend of events for a more intimate, close group of people who matter most.
From a wedding photographer's standpoint, I love to be able to spend the additional time with my clients and their families. It makes for a very relaxed atmosphere that produces plenty of time for amazing moments and results.
I met up with Sophia + Ryan and their wedding party for pictures at the rehearsal dinner in downtown Galena at the popular restaurant One Eleven Main, where we ended the night before heading back to Chestnut Mountain Resort to prepare for the wedding day.
The next morning, I met up with the bride + bridesmaids as they were preparing for the day. It was a gorgeous midwest mid-July day, perfect weather for a wedding.
As the beautiful bride Sophie and her girls prepped their final details for the day we snapped some final snapshots before the ceremony.
The guys were all busy getting ready as we met them for photos. They looked super sharp in navy blue suits, cream ties and pocket squares, and light tanned leather shoes and belt to match.
A trolley was on location ferrying guests to and from Chestnut Mountain Lodge to the ceremony location under a mile away, overlooking the Mississippi River.
Chestnut Mountain Resort boasts a unique wedding venue setup, especially for guests looking for an extended or weekend stay.
In the winter, it's a ski resort. In the summer, it's a wedding venue, lodge style in with a nice in-house restaurant and ski style bar, and a recreational hub, offering trail hiking, biking, segway tours, and even a fairly impressive, and slightly intimidating zipline off the side of a cliff.
Rarely do other wedding venues boast all of the above, plus reasonable accommodations and availability for just about most your wedding guests.
The best part by far; the tent hosting the reception, and the bar and dancefloor, is located a mere stones throw from the lodge and hotel rooms, so that guests have zero question or hassle of worrying about how to get home after having a great night.
Second best part: being able to take your bride + groom on a ski-lift down a mountain in full wedding attire and capture beautiful views of the Galena valley and Mississippi River cutting its way through the background.
The rest of the evening was filled with plenty of dancing and laughter, as well as cake and plenty of cookies for the groom! Sophia had a secret order of special cookies brought in just for Ryan because they're his favorite.
True love = chocolate chip cookies, people. I've been saying this for years!
Congratulations again to Sophia + Ryan, and thank you for letting me share in all of the laughs, smiles, and memories.
